What is the grade level and subject area for this activity? This activity is for Spanish IV students in grades 11-12. |

Who will students collaborate with? Students will collaborate with their same age peers in Mexico, Spain, Cuba, Costa Rica, and Argentina. |

How will this be incorporated into the curriculum? This project will be the culmination of a unit based on holiday traditions in the Spanish-speaking world. |

How will each student be involved? Each student will be responsible for communicating with another student via e-mail (in Spanish) from an assigned country to obtain information about how families in that country celebrate Christmas. |

What will students do with the information? After individually obtaining information, students will work in groups with other students studying the same country. They will combine their findings to create a holiday celebration in the tradition of the target culture. |

What types of information will students give to the collaborating party? Students will provide limited information to the collaborating parties. They will inform the collaborating parties about the nature of the project and may provide them with information about the course they are taking. With parental permission, students may send photos of their final celebration project to the collaborating parties. |

What will be the teacher's role during this activity? The teacher will ensure that all students are actively participating by monitoring e-mails and group work. The teacher will also assist students in the translation of outgoing and incoming e-mails. |

What will the teacher do to prepare students for the collaboration? The teacher will instruct students in the proper use of e-mail and assist students in creating accounts through ePALS. The teacher will lead a class discussion on the type of information they should be looking for. |

How will the teacher evaluate the success of this activity? Students will be assessed according to a checklist (for individual work) and a scoring rubric for each group's final presentation. Students will also be asked to take an anonymous short survey to determine their feelings toward the activity and its usefulness and appeal. |
