A Day In The Life Of A Teacher

Our goals for today are:
  1. To be able to define the term "podcast" and to explain how podcasting works.
  2. To listen to examples of podcasts.
  3. To discuss ways in which podcasting can be incorporated into the classroom in all subject areas.
  4. To create a podcast 2 different ways.
  5. To share your products and ideas with the others.

Humor Break: What's So Funny about Education?

And away we go! We are now ready to begin creating podcasts.
  1. Everyone should have a headset or microphone.  Check to ensure that it is plugged into the proper port.
  2. Go to Podomatic, the website we will be using.
  3. Sign up for a free account by clicking "sign up" in the upper right corner of the window.
  4. When choosing a podomatic address, I suggest keeping it simple and using a combination of your first/last name, initials, etc.  Write this down - it's your user ID and website address!
  5. Click on the "My Podcast" tab, "Post New Episode" and select "record with your webcam or microphone".
  6. Record your podcast! You should listen to it before posting the recording to your site. You can re-record as many times as you'd like. Remember that you may be asked to share your episode!
  7. After you have recorded successfully, click "use recording" and then "next step".
  8. At this point, you should name your episode and write a description of it.  At the next step, you may choose to add an image, but it's not necessary.
  9. You may choose to "filter" your podcast (they better all be clean!) and add tags that would help people find it in a search.   For example, if you do an alphabet podcast, you might use "alphabet" or "abc" as tags.
  10. Once you have verified all your information, post your episode.   Congratulations!

Another option for creating podcasts is to use Windows' built in sound recorder.  This is useful if there is a problem with Podomatic's website or internet is not available.  Sound recorder is located by clicking on the start menu -- accessories -- sound recorder.

  1. When you are ready to record, simply click "record". If the recorder is working, you will see waves in the line.
  2. Click "stop" to finish; you can preview and re-record if necessary.
  3. Save the file with a unique name; make sure you change where the file saves to if you do not want it to save in "My Documents".
  4. You can upload this file to your Podomatic page by clicking the "My Podcast" tab and selecting "upload media from your computer". Browse for your newly created sound file and upload! It's as simple as that!

Discussion:  What are some benefits of podcasting? Drawbacks? How can you incorporate podcasting into your classroom?

This short video does an excellent job of recapping the process of podcasting and demonstrates how podcasts are distributed online.
