Tips for Effective Internet Searching

Secondary Spanish

bullet

Identify a research question and important ideas and concepts within this question.

bullet

Brainstorm terms (and synonyms) that describe the ideas and concepts in Spanish and English.

bullet

Be as specific as possible in your search terms.

bullet

Use reputable search engines (i.e. Google, Yahoo!, AltaVista, AOL, etc.) and don't be afraid
to use more than one.  Different engines may yield different results.

bullet

Try some Spanish language search engines. Click here for a good list.

bullet

To find a phrase, use quotation marks around the phrase. (i.e. "long-haired dogs").
This will return only pages that contain all of the words in your search.

bullet

If you are unsure of how to spell a word, put a ? at the end of the search term. (i.e. Belice?)

bullet

Once you have found documents on your topic, you can press Ctrl + F to find terms within
that document.

bullet

Carefully scrutinize the websites you encounter; the most accurate information will come from
government, educational, and organizational websites.

bullet

Bookmark the pages you found most useful.  This will allow for easy access in the future.
