Ecotourism in Costa Rica

1.  The teacher will divide the class into groups of 3-4 students.

2.  Before you begin your individual research, please review the following sites to familiarize yourself with Costa Rica:
CIA World Factbook Costa Rica -
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/cs.html
  Geographia Costa Rica - http://www.geographia.com/costa-rica/

3.  As a group, decide which person will take on each role.
     The roles are as follows:
Surfer/Beach Bum (enjoys surfing and beautiful beaches)
Wildlife Expert (interested in seeing quetzals, sloths, and nesting turtles)
        National Park Enthusiast
(cloud forests, rain forests, volcanoes, hot springs)
        Cultural Connoisseur (food, people, museums)

Each student should plan 4-5 days doing activities he/she prefers, based on your new persona.  It is completely your decision as to which activities to include. Each of you will find helpful links on the resource page to guide you.  You are not limited to these sites, and I encourage you to infuse your own ideas and personality into creating your portion of the trip!

4.  After completing some initial research, you should choose the activities you think will best fit into your trip.  Then, delve further into these activities.  Using your findings, create a mini-itinerary and budget for presentation to the rest of your group.  Your mini-itinerary should include the hotels you plan to stay at (assumption: all hotels are available during your stay) and the activities you will do. Be sure to take into account weather conditions, currency exchange rates, and hours of operation.  Be prepared to defend your ideas and budget. (Note:  You should not attempt to spend the entire $2000, just a portion of it; enough to cover the costs of your 4-5 days of the trip. Don't forget to budget for spending money, meals, transportation, and your activities.)

5.  As a group, you should find a time to meet to discuss your mini-itineraries and budgets.  At this time, each of you should present your findings to the group.  After each person has presented without interruption, as a group, you must decide how your 2 week trip will best be spent.  Once you have approved your new itinerary as a group, create a booklet and a budget that encompasses your entire trip.  The booklet should be written in Spanish, must include at least 2 days of activities for each persona and 4 photos (can include more) and may include bus schedules, weather forecasts, and any other information you think pertinent to your trip.  These are the only constraints for your final product, ultimately, the format for the booklet and budget are up to you.
